Geplande vertrektijd van mijn vlucht was 17.05. Dat werd 17.35, 18.15, 18.35, 19.00, 19.15, 19.30, 20.15 en toen...'Flight Cancelled'. Gelukkig had ik om 15.30, toen de hemel van strak blauw naar pikzwart ging in een tijd van 3 minuten, al het gevoel dat het niet ging gebeuren vandaag en dus boekte ik al een hotel als backup optie. Ga natuurlijk niet op een vliegveld slapen of een motel 6.

De beuaty van O'Hare
Pick dit net op van weather.com terwijl ik op het vliegveld zit, er was zelfs een tornado watch...
Between 3:00pm and 4:15pm CT, the Chicago metro was absolutely pounded by intense, violent thunderstorms. The majority of the storm damage was due to destructive winds on the order of 50 to 70 mph winds.
Throughout Chicago, there have been damage reports of widespread felled large trees (some over 100 years old), blown out windows in skyscrapers, power poles and lines down, semis and cars blown off roadways, roof collapse, building collapses, and finally home and building damage mainly due to fallen trees.
Because the storms pounded the area during the rush hour period, traffic across the city came to a standstill. The thunderstorms developed over eastern Iowa and quickly pushed east towards Lake Michigan.
One stalled front, followed by a second one, has focused day after day of flooding rain and thunderstorms over northern Iowa, southern Minnesota, southern Wisconsin, northern Indiana, northwest Ohio and adjacent areas. A number of locations are dealing with 6-day rainfall totals close to or over 12 inches and a few rivers with near record or record crests.
The second stalled front will finally begin to move, advancing from a Michigan-to-Kansas line Friday morning to the Kentucky-Tennessee and Missouri-Arkansas borders by Sunday. Heavy rain and severe (damaging wind gusts and some hail) thunderstorms will still drench the area from Kansas to lower Michigan Friday.
The thunderstorms will shift into the eastern Great Lakes and Ohio Valley Saturday.
By Sunday, the Plains and Midwest will be almost entirely rain free, finally allowing the flood waters to recede.
North of the front, highs will be in the 60s and 70s Friday and in the 70s over the weekend. South of the front, the heat will continue with highs in the 90s and even one more day of 100 degrees or just above for western and central Kentucky on Friday.
Monday through Thursday, a new cold front will traverse the region from the Dakotas to the eastern Ohio Valley. More strong thunderstorms and downpours are possible but at least this next front will keep moving southward and eastward each day.

O'Hare Again Named Worst For Airport Delays
Wat ik zelf al dacht werd deze week maar weer eens bevstigd: cbs2chicago.com - O'Hare Again Named Worst For Airport Delays
O'Hare International Airport, de schrik van iedere reiziger. Oneindig groot, crisis druk en altijd vertraging. En wie vliegt er elke week naar toe en weer terug naar DC? Juist...... Ik schrijf dit blog stukje dus al wachtend bij de gate omdat mijn united vlucht weer vertraagd is. 1,5 uur deze keer. 'Airtraffic control' als reden.
Iedere week vertraging, iedere week een andere reden. Hieronder een opsomming van de redenen die de airline je verteld en mijn interpretatie.
Air traffic control - te schijterig om in een beetje regen te vliegen. Echt zodra het hier maar een beetje regent of waait gaat de boel plat. FAA regulations heet het dan. Te schijterig denk ik dan. In Europa heb ik dat veel minder meegemaakt
Maintenance problem - de airline is te krenterig om preventief onderhoud te plegen. De reparatie komt wel als het werkelijk kapot is. Alsof ze een discobus in Turkije runnen zo knullig. En ze hebben natuurlijk net dat onderdeel nodig dat helemaal aan de andere kant van het vliegveld terrein ligt.
Crew - de piloten en stewardessen lagen nog op hun hotel te slapen, neuken of hingen nog in de hotelbar. Alleen airline personeel kan te laat op werk komen zonder consequencies. En dan nog voordringen bij de security lijn ook.
Incoming flight delay - een combinatie van alle bovenstaande.

6 dead as Mississippi River bridge falls amid rush hour in Minneapolis - CNN.com
Catastrophe in Minneapolis! Een brug dondert in elkaar net midden in de spits.
Op dit moment (drie uur na het ineenstorten) zijn er al 7 doden. Maar er liggen nog zo'n 30/40 autos in de Mississippi, dus het zal wel oplopen.
